Our History

In 2015/2016, a survey was conducted on the survival status of the Grey Crowned Crane Lake Old’ Bolossat, the findings revealed deadly human-induced threats by the local community, ranging from poaching of both eggs and life birds to habitat degradation, these avoidable threats resulted to unsuccessful breeding despite the lake hosting more than 100 breeding pairs and more than 900 resident individuals, in 2015/2016 breeding season for example, no single chick attained fledging age due to human activities.

From the start of his survey in 2015, awareness creation was conducted to on site where this survey was carried out especially those linked to key sites for the survival of the cranes e.g breeding sites, roosting sites and feeding sites, these people were mainly; fishermen, grazers, wetland resource users and neighboring land owners, majority of them voluntarily embraced the call to protect and conserve the Cranes, this is when a network of Cranes Conservation Volunteers was established. .

For the purposes of a more coordinated networking with these Volunteers, in 2017 Cranes Conservation Volunteers was formally registered comprising of people who by then had shown interests in birds conservation from Lake Ol’ Bolossat ecosystem, this move was to further set modalities for the already founded Cranes Conservation Volunteers network.

The aim of founding this organization is to offer a platform of engaging people into practical and active protection of the Grey Crowned Crane and other threatened wildlife, guided by collaboration and an informed decision making that will benefit both man and nature at large.
